I am a lesson on why people shouldn't be allowed to watch reality television. It gives people ideas, or in my case it takes an idea that has been just ticking away in the back of your brain, getting a bit drowned out by all the day to day stuff, until BOOM it goes off like a bomb, and suddenly you just HAVE to start doing something about it. I might succeed. I might fail. Either way it's very clear who is to blame here.
MasterChef. Yep. All those "home cooks" and Heston, don't even get me started on Heston. Watching them each night the ticking got louder and louder and now here we are. The start of a journey. How it's going to end up I don't know, and I'll tell you that deciding to start something like this at 35 is shit scary, but you know what, I've worked in the same job for literally half my life, change is good (and at this point I am NOT about to quit my day job).
Which I guess brings us to Chick & Pea. The husband and I have for years talked about starting a B&B in our later years and over the last few years this has turned into casual discussions about opening our own place. A cool (cause I am cool), family friendly place where people can go and have some good healthy (and not so healthy) food. BUT, as we all know there are, oh, around a billion of those in Canberra, in actual fact we have the highest amount of eating establishments per capita, Yay!
I decided a little while ago, when the idea first sprouted, that MY place would be allergy aware. Someone could come to my place and find SOMETHING they could have. My place will have egg free options. Coeliac? All good, there willll be something for you. No dairy? No worries.
As a parent of a child with potentially life threatening allergies I know, all too well, the frustration of being able to go out for a bite. Hot chips have been my lifeline. And that sucks. In six years the list of allergens has included: Egg, Soy, Banana, Kiwi, Peanut, Pine Nuts and pretty much all Legumes. Awesome! But, hey, in the scheme of things it could be worse. Much worse. A happy and healthy child is more than others have.
So here it is. Chick & Pea. A journey with me whilst I fiddle around with recipes and get started on my way. Thanks for tagging along. Feedback is always welcome and I'll be needing people to sample goodies every now and then or the day job workmates are going to get HUGE......on second thought, I'm OK with that.
